Is your backup battery working at its best?

In the event of a power outage, your alarm system’s backup battery or power supply is the only thing that keeps your property protected.

Due to the nature of these types of batteries and the amount of power they need to supply your alarm system with, it is not uncommon for alarm system batteries (of any type, brand or place of origin) to lose their power over time. As such, if batteries are not regularly serviced and/or replaced, your property will not be protected during a power cut.

Power cuts can happen for any number of reasons, most significantly of which is in the event of a burglar disabling your property’s power supply.

It is highly recommended that your alarm system’s backup battery be serviced at least once a year for domestic properties and most insurance companies ask that commercial properties have their batteries checked at least once every six months (twice a year). Having your battery installed by a professional will ensure optimal operating time and the correct wiring – installing a backup battery on your own can lead to complications down the line, which may otherwise go unnoticed.

Do your smoke alarms go off without fire or smoke?

Not only is this dangerous, but it can be incredibly annoying too – having a loud and overly active smoke detector is a nuisance to say the least.

If your smoke detectors are being activated without the presence of any abnormal heat or smoke build up, it is very likely that your detectors are in need of a service.

The technology in most modern smoke alarms is reliant on a very sensitive panel within the alarm’s housing. If that sensor comes into contact with too much dust, the alarm can become immune to real smoke, which is a problem in itself but, moreover, high levels of dust that stagnate in and around the smoke detector’s sensor can lead to bacterial growth that then clogs the sensor and gives off false carbon dioxide readings. This is often overlooked and usually leads to false alarms.

Other reasons as to why smoke detectors go off unexpectedly include:

  • Previous heat damage
  • Oil build-up (from cooking)
  • Moisture and damp
  • Damaged sensors or housings
  • Faulty wiring
  • Age

If your user manual does not present the information you need to remedy your faulty smoke alarms, please get in touch with us today and we will arrange to have one of our qualified technicians pay you a visit.

Do your motion detectors set the alarm off for no reason?

While that may seem like the case, more often than not your motion detectors are doing their job perfectly – their only issue is that they’ve been set up with their sensitivity too high. If you refer to your product’s user manual you are likely to find a simple way to lower their sensitivity.

With that being said, there are other reasons for your motion detectors to set the alarm off unexpectedly, for example having non-pet-specialised detectors in your home when you own a dog or cat. You can view Visonic’s pet-proof sensors here.

If that is the case, you will need to upgrade your sensors to ensure that they continue to protect your home, even while your pets play throughout the night.

Other common reasons for overly active motion detectors can include:

  • Infra-red beam interference (where one detector’s infra-red beams cross paths with another)
  • Wind moving through your home or office (moving papers, curtains, blinds etc.)
  • Dust (if dust accrues in one area of the building and is suddenly made to disperse through movement or wind, this can sometimes trigger motion detectors)
  • Damaged cabling
  • Damaged housings
  • Tampering
  • Loud noises or Bass (reverberations in the air can cause motion detectors to activate the alarm system, so to avoid false alarms, keep Bass levels low)

Call us today to investigate the issue and our professional Visonic technicians will be sure to find and fix the problem with ease.

Is your system constantly giving off false alarms?

False alarms can occur for a number of reasons, many of which are the result of external issues that have little to do with the wiring or electronics of your specific property.

Common reasons for false alarms include:

  • Extreme weather conditions,
  • Pest damage,
  • Fractured cables,
  • Faulty connections,
  • Age,
  • Wear and tear,
  • DIY accidents,
  • Tampering,
  • Signal interference

Although the problem may be small, the ensuing noise can be incredibly irritating for both you and your neighbours.

Although the noise itself can be disturbing, it is also an open invitation to potential thieves and burglars as they will be made aware of your alarm system’s ongoing problems. If they feel that the alarm is likely to go off regardless of their actions, they will assume that you will feel the same and, as such, attempt to break in without the fear of being caught.

Having your alarm or respective security system regularly maintained by a qualified Visonic technician can prevent false alarms and ensure maximal protection for you, your family and your business.

Contact us today to identify the issue, we’ll follow up with the appropriate remedial response and help to get your property’s security re-established as soon as possible.
